In 2024, then-UCLA Interim Chancellor Darnell Hunt announced a significant cultural transformation that will move the institution beyond siloed initiatives and toward respect, belonging, engagement, and inclusion. The inclusive excellence framework is positioned as a core institutional value, as it is identified in the Chancellor’s One UCLA initiative and is a central theme of the UCLA Strategic Plan 2023–28.
The Office of Inclusive Excellence (OIE) was opened in July 2025 to advance cultural change through collaboration, learning, dialogue, and partnership across the university community. OIE’s mission is “to weave excellence into our culture and institutional fabric through intentional connections, respectful engagement, deep learning, and challenging yet constructive dialogue.” Achieving inclusive excellence begins with a shared understanding of what it looks like at UCLA and how it is reflected in everyday practices, interactions, and institutional culture.
Overview
The Inclusive Excellence (IE) Matrix is one of several tools intended to support and advance inclusive excellence across UCLA. Meaningful cultural change requires shared commitment and participation from faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The matrix offers a common framework for understanding, applying, and reflecting on inclusive excellence in everyday practices, programs, and interactions across the institution.
